Update: Man sentenced to more than 12 years behind bars for committing sex crimes against children
A collaborative effort between the Port Angeles Police Department, Olympic National Park Rangers, and the Investigative Services Branch has resulted in the felony conviction of a man who committed multiple crimes against children.
Their investigation began in 2012 after allegations of sexual assault were made by a juvenile against a local resident. Investigators conducted numerous interviews, executed two search warrants, and coordinated efforts with federal and state prosecutors.
In January of 2014, John Holly Whitman of Port Angeles, Washington, was arrested and charged with 18 felonies and 11 misdemeanors in state court. Police records show that Whitman told investigators that he'd knowingly engaged in sexual activity with children as young as 11 years old; investigators also found digital media in Whitman's home that contained child pornography.
Whitman was sentenced in January to over 12 years behind bars and lifetime probation. He must also register as a sex offender. In December of 2015, Whitman pleaded guilty in state court to three felonies: Rape of a Child, Child Molestation, and Possession of Depiction of Minors Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct.
