Centennial Series Continues with Lighthouse Trail Hike

Centennial Series Continues with Lighthouse Trail Hike

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 30, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

SAVANNAH -On Sunday, Feb. 21, Fort Pulaski National Monument will continue our centennial celebration of the National Park Service with the second event of the series. This will be a ranger-guided hike to our very own Cockspur Island Lighthouse. This 1.7 mile out and back guided hike will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete, and will be offered twice: at 11:00AM and 2:00 PM. The lighthouse trail winds along the east side of the island and is appropriate for visitors of all ages.

During the hike visitors will experience the wonder of Cockspur Island's flora and fauna as a park ranger explains the importance of the salt marsh and the diversity of the creatures that inhabit it. The trail ends with the closest land view of the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. Built in 1856 to mark the South Channel of the Savannah River, the lighthouse has endured crashing waves, powerful hurricanes, and even survived the 1862 bombardment of Fort Pulaski by Union troops on Tybee Island. This hike will be a great opportunity for photography and learning more about the cultural and natural environments of Fort Pulaski National Monument.

Visitors are asked to meet near the post cemetery on the north side of the fort. Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. There is a good chance the trail will be muddy, so bring appropriate clothes and shoes!

What to Bring:

Clothes appropriate for the weather

Close-toed shoes that can get muddy

Plenty of water

Snacks

Any necessary medications

Optional Items:

Binoculars

Camera

Bug spray and sunscreen

Hat or bandana
