Crescent City, CA-Beginning early Tuesday, April 26, through 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 28, the western end of HowlandHill Road within Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park will be closed to vehicle traffic due to a paving and road maintenance project. The closed section ofHowland Hill Road begins near the park's western boundary just east of the Elk Valley Casino and continues to just before the Boy Scout Tree Trailhead. Lockedgates at each end of the roadway will block access for vehicles. Buses andother traffic needing access to Redwood National and State Park's Howland HillOutdoor School programs will be allowed through Tuesday only, but mayexperience some delays.
Park visitors may still access the scenic wonders and recreational opportunities along Howland Hill Road by accessing the road from its eastern point at Hwy. 199. The road will be open from Hwy. 199 tothe Boy Scout Tree Trailhead, although travelers should anticipate possible delays due to on-going South Fork bridge construction.
Alternatives scenic drivesfor exploring the beautiful old-growth forests of Redwood National and State Parks include: Newton B. Drury ScenicParkway, Bald Hills Road, Hwy. 199, and Walker Road.
