ASHFORD- Mount Rainier National Park has begun preparation of a Fisheries Management Plan and Environmental Assessment (EA) to guide management of native and nonnative fish populations in the park. Public comments will be accepted until June 6, 2016.
Superintendent Randy King stated "We are interested to understand public concerns about native and nonnative fish management in the park."
Preliminary alternatives have been developed to identify different ways that the park can meet its obligations to protect native fish, including rare and listed species and critical habitat, while providing for recreational fishing opportunities. These alternatives are described in a public scoping newsletter available at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/morafishmgtplan.
Public involvement for the proposed plan will continue with publication of the draft Environmental Assessment/Fisheries Management Plan. The plan is being developed in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Native American tribal partners, and other NPS staff, including the Water Resources Division.
