WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, SD - Preparations are nearly complete for the May 21 Bird Blitz at Wind Cave National Park. As part of the celebration of the National Park Service Centennial, Wind Cave will be hosting a variety of events throughout the day involving birds. For anyone who cannot participate in person, they will be able to follow along on the park’s Facebook page and Twitter account.

The Bird Blitz will offer activities for all skill and interest levels: bird walks for the beginners, bird surveys for the more experienced birders, bird box construction for family groups (the first 90 participants get a free bird box), mist netting to see birds up close and demonstrations with live hawks, owls and eagles to learn about conservation of raptors. Staff will discuss bird apps for phones and ipads, such as ebird and inaturalist, field guides, binoculars, spotting scopes and birding ethics

Park staff will be updating the park’s Facebook page and Twitter account throughout the day to document activities and involve a virtual audience. For a complete listing of activities, visit www.nps.gov/wica and follow the links to news releases. For more information, call the park at 605-745-4600.
