A 21-year-old Portland, Oregon, man fell 250 feet into Wheeler Creek drainage at the Pinnacles area at approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. Park rangers and an Oregon Department of Forestry wildland fire engine crew responded to the incident and carried the man out of the drainage to the park's ambulance. The ambulance then transported him to the Mount Scott Trailhead area, where an Airlink medical helicopter, of Klamath Falls, Oregon, transported him to a hospital.
Much of the terrain in Crater Lake National Park has steep slopes with rocky, gravelly, or sandy surfaces that can pose fall hazards. Practice good judgement at all times-stay far back from cliff or slope edges, wear appropriate shoes and clothing, and avoid unnecessary risks. Hiking inside the caldera is strictly prohibited year round.
