Temporary Closure on Oak Island due to Bear Activity

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 14, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

Bayfield, WI - A temporary closure is in place for Oak Island campsite 4, the Northwest Beach Trail from campsite 4 to the first trail junction, and the Oak Island camping zone. General day use is prohibited in the campsite and trail closure areas. However, backpackers with valid permits for other Oak Island camp sites can be dropped off at the dock or the open campsite for which they have a permit. The Loop Trail is closed from Site 1 to the trail intersection with the overlook trail due to impacts from the storm. The closure is in effect beginning 8:00 am on Aug. 13, 2016.

One resident bear is frequenting the area and has exhibited behavior that indicates it is not afraid of humans. The help of visitors is needed to make sure that no food is left unattended and any bear activity is reported immediately to Park Headquarters at 715- 779-3398, ext. 122.

The closure will be re-evaluated at least weekly. As soon as it appears the bear will stay away from visitor use areas, the closed portion of the island will be reopened.
