Cape Lookout National Seashore Status Update Following Tropical Storm Hermine

Harkers Island, NC -The Tropical Storm Hermine has moved through the area. "The park was fortunate and only minimal impacts occurred," said Superintendent Pat Kenney. Following assessments of the park, the following areas have returned to normal operations.

* Harkers Island Visitor Center (HIVC) and Beaufort Visitor Information Center (BVIC)

* Cape Lookout Lighthouse (for addition information on the lighthouse tours and associated costs, please visit the park website, www.nps.gov/calo)

* Great Island and Long Point Cabin Camps

* Portsmouth Historic District

* Cape Lookout Village Historic District

The park is open to ORV use. The areas of the back road that were closed due to flooding on North Core Banks have been opened. There are sections of the beach that have buffers in place to protect sea turtles and are closed to vehicles. Visitors can find additional information on the use of ORVs in the park on our website.

Ferry Services

Harkers Island and Beaufort

The park's passenger ferry service concessionaire, Island Express Ferry Service, is open to transport passengers to the park. Visit www.islandexpressferryservices.com or call the ferry ticket office at (252) 728-7433 for the ferry schedule and ticket information.

Great Island

For ferry services to Great Island, contact Davis Shore Ferry at (252) 729-3474, or www.davisferry.com, or, Cape Lookout Cabins and Camps at (252) 729-9751, or www.calocabins-campsinc.net.

Long Point

For vehicle ferry service to Long Point, contact Morris Marina Kabin Kamps &Ferry Service, Inc. at (252) 225-4261, or www.portsmouthislandfishing.com/.

Though Tropical Storm Hermine has passed over the Park, visitors should be cautious of high surf, and rip currents. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Instead, remain calm and swim across the current, parallel to the shore, slowly working your way back to the beach at an angle. Signal for help if you need it.
