Notice of Intent to Burn Debris Piles in Denali National Park and Preserve

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 8, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

Fire Management staff at Denali National Park and Preserve are planning to burn debris piles at the Toklat Road Camp (Mile 53 on the Denali Park Road) and in Kantishna at approximately Mile 91 (near the confluence of Eureka and Moose Creeks) beginning next week. The planned ignition dates will fall between September 12-23, weather permitting.

The material to be burned includes trees, brush and other natural material from hazard fuel reduction (fire protection) projects around buildings and along the road. The treatments are necessary to provide defensible space around structures, including historic cabins, and minimize control issues during a wildland fire.

During burning, smoke may be visible from the Denali Park Road and from aircraft.

Debris piles are located on gravel and rock beds and are not immediately adjacent to surrounding fuels. NPS Fire Management staff will be monitoring the burning on site. The piles are expected to burn for two to three days.
