Two swimming-related fatalities occurred off Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches this afternoon.

A 70-year-old male was swimming and apparently caught in a rip current just north of the Rodanthe Pier. Several individuals nearby swam out to assist. DARE county EMS and Chicamacomico Surf Rescue quickly arrived at the scene, recovered two individuals from the water, and performed life saving measures on the 70-year old male and a 51-year old male that attempted to assist; however, resuscitation efforts on both individuals were unsuccessful.

“The National Park Service is very sorry to learn about these fatalities and our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims," said Outer Banks Group Superintendent David Hallac.
