Washington, DC - On Thursday, Nov. 17, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) will implement a towpath detour around the Lock 3 plaza located between 30th Street and Thomas Jefferson Street in Georgetown. The detour is needed because the towpath and surrounding area will be closed for the reconstruction of Lock 3 and the rehabilitation of Lock 4 in Georgetown. The towpath will remain open from 30th Street all the way to Tide Lock and Mile Marker 0. Visitors wishing to travel to Tide Lock and Mile Marker 0 area should follow the posted detour signs.
Once the Lock 3 and Lock 4 project is completed in 2018, reproduction canal boats will once again be able to travel along the waterway. Work is being completed by Clarke Construction under contract with the National Park Service. The park will provide updates on the project as appropriate.
