Clean up litter along Limantour Beach
Restore native sand dunes at Abbotts Lagoon
Point Reyes National Seashore, in partnership with GirlTrek and the Point Reyes National Seashore Association, will be hosting a beach cleanup at Limantour Beach. Join us from 11 am to 2 pm as we clean up litter on one of the most visited beaches at Point Reyes. Along the way, you will have a chance of seeing gray whales migrating in Drakes Bay and many sea birds along the beach probing for food as they refuel on their trips south.
"Trekkers" (aka, members of GirlTrek) will join other volunteers to help clean the beach. GirlTrek is a national non-profit committed to getting African-American women outside and walking to promote healthy lifestyles. GirlTrek has visited Point Reyes National Seashore in past years for hikes on the Bear Valley and Tomales Point Trails. This year they will be taking part in the beach cleanup, hiking down to the end of the beach, and then cleaning up litter on the way back. Oakland GirlTrek City Organizer Alicia Wilkins is excited to return to Point Reyes National Seashore. "Point Reyes is a Girltrek Oakland favorite! The beauty of the ocean, the scenic hiking trails, and of course the friendly and welcoming professionalism of the wonderful Point Reyes staff are what keep us coming back to hike the trails of this beautiful California National Park."
Alternatively, spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the beautiful and scenic Abbotts Lagoon. Help the dune restoration team remove searocket, as well as New Zealand spinach, iceplant, and nightshade-invasive plants that are threatening a thriving patch of federally endangered Tidestrom’s lupine. Invasive plants often outcompete native plants, leaving less room for them to grow. Come help us continue the restoration effort!
In addition to the restoration work, Cody Ender-the park's Coastal Dune Technician-will give an introduction to the site and discuss managing the larger Coastal Dune Restoration Project.
Come take part in either project and join what is sure to be a memorable day, "make it a day on, not a day off!"
