Visitor Services Volunteer Application Deadline Is Next Week

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Feb. 11, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Haleakalā National Park wishes to remind people that the “Visitor Services Volunteers" application deadline is next week, on Wednesday, February, 15, 2017. The park is recruiting local residents for visitor center volunteers and Kia`i ala Hele (Trail Guardians) volunteers, to educate visitors about the unique natural and cultural resources of Haleakalā. Families are particularly encouraged to apply.

Visitor center volunteers commit to volunteering 6 hours a week for 6 months. They provide information about park resources and issue back country permits in the two visitor centers located in the Summit District. They may also assist, as needed, on guided walks or talks. This program is a new one and 2017 is the pilot year.

Kia`i ala Hele volunteers commit to volunteering 6 hours a month for 6 months. They will provide general and safety information to hikers and backpackers on popular park trails in the Summit and Kīpahulu Districts. This program is in its third year.

Three required training sessions will be offered: Tuesday, February 21 5pm-8pm, Pukalani Community Center; Wednesday, Feb. 22, 5-8pm, Pukalani Community Center; and Saturday, Feb. 25, 8am to 5pm, at park headquarters. Trainings will cover natural and cultural resources, education, safety, and radio protocols. Volunteers must attend all sessions.

An additional training on CPR/First Aid will be scheduled in March or volunteers can provide proof of current certifications.
