UPDATE: The Rising Sun Trail and TRW Loop reopened the evening of Friday, February 24. The Sostomo Trail remains closed.
The majority of trails at Solstice Canyon will remain temporarily closed after sustaining damage from winter weather last week. However, the popular Solstice Canyon Trail, which takes hikers to the waterfall and the Tropical Terrace ruins, remains open.
The trails were closed Saturday morning after the heaviest rainfall passed. Mud slides and trees are blocking the Rising Sun and Sostomo trails, and a large oak tree is blocking the TRW Loop Trail. The Solstice Canyon Trail is the only remaining one open.
The trail crew of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area estimates it could be up to three weeks before trails are restored and safe for hikers. Visitors can check the recreation area's Alerts & Closures webpage and Twitter account for updates.
Hikers using the Solstice Canyon Trail should take caution around the creek, which is currently running with higher than usual volumes of water. Climbing around the waterfall is also closed, as the area is a sensitive riparian habitat.
