Low Water at the Cushwa Basin

Low Water at the Cushwa Basin

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 9, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Williamsport, MD - The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O Canal) will be temporarily lowering the water level at the Cushwa Basin (MM 99.6) at Williamsport to perform repairs to Lock 44. This work project will waterproof the lock gate so that historic reproduction launch boats will be lifted and lowered through the lock. The repairs are estimated to begin on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 and completed by Wednesday, March 22, 2017. The basin water levels will be lowered by approximately 2 feet leaving substantial water in the basin and canal for wildlife. The water level will be returned to its normal level once repairs are completed.

Thank you for your patience during this necessary improvement.
