On March 2, 2017 Guilford Courthouse NMP turned 100 years old, and we still have the Centennial fever! The park was created in 1887 by the Guilford Battleground Company, and was the first Revolutionary War battlefield designated by Congress as a National Park in 1917. We began our Centennial commemoration with three educational music programs by the Colonial Music Institute. David and Ginger Hildebrand are musicians who specialize in researching and performing 18th century music. They presented a free music concert for the community and Next Gen educational programs for fourth graders.
The children at General Greene Elementary and Jefferson Elementary enthusiastically embraced this educational opportunity. The students enjoyed guessing the tunes and viewing the period instruments up close. The Hildebrands concluded with a concert at Greensboro College, to an audience of adults and high school students. David and Ginger demonstrated songs about the Revolutionary War battles, and social quips of the time such as the memorable song “Yankee Doodle."
