Fort Oglethorpe, GA: At 2 pm, on Saturday, April 22, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special 2 hour car caravan tour of Chickamauga Battlefield exploring the battle’s sensory history. Please remember to dress appropriately for weather conditions and to bring a bottle of water.
This tour will visit several locations within the battlefield exploring what participants of the battle heard, touched, smelled, tasted, and saw in 1863. For example, one soldier described the sound of the battle as “this terrible sound" while another compared it to the “roar of a thousand Niagaras." Still, others smelled the burning forests and fields, tasted bitter black powder, and felt the fall of branches, seeing things that would haunt them for the remainder of their lives. Combat is an assault on the senses and Chickamauga was no different.
