SAN FRANCISCO - National Park Week, America's largest celebration of national heritage, takes place April 15 to 23. Throughout the country, hundreds of programs and events will encourage visitors to explore new places and enjoy new experiences on our public lands.
"Come learn something new about your national parks. Whether you try an activity for the first time or use the Golden Gate National Recreation Area mobile app to explore a new corner of the park, we invite you to Find Your Park during National Park Week," said Craig Kenkel, acting superintendent of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
"Join park rangers at GGNRA for free events that introduce you to birding, crabbing, military history, healthy activities and more."

National Park Prescription Day at Crissy Field
April 23, 11 am to 3 pm
Around the country, National ParkRx Day showcases the physical and mental health benefits of spending time in nature; many medical doctors now write prescriptions for the outdoors as an antidote for diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and other ailments. During National Park Week, Golden Gate National Recreation Area will host one of the largest ParkRx Day events in the country. Enjoy ranger walks, free exercise classes and a healthy living fair with 20 local organizations. Details
Alcatraz Island Exhibition: “Alcatraz: The Last Day"
Daily, 10 am to 2 pm
Life Magazine photographer Leigh Wiener was on Alcatraz Island March 21, 1963, to capture its final day as a federal penitentiary. Banner-size images of Wiener’s powerful photos are on exhibit in the New Industries Building through August. The New Industries Building is open daily 10 am to 2 pm. (Note, the exhibition is free, but ferry and service fees for Alcatraz Island apply.) Details

Presidio 101: a Family-Friendly Bike Tour
April 15 at 10 am: A gentle 4-mile bike ride leads you through the history of the Presidio of San Francisco and departs from the beautiful new Presidio Visitor Center. Details
Pier Crabbing 101 at Fort Baker
April 15 at 10 am: Get up close with some of San Francisco Bay’s salty residents. Registration required. Details
Birding 101 in the Marin Headlands
April 23 at 9:30 am: Learn about the feathered denizens of Rodeo Lagoon. Registration required. Details
Fort Point 101: Cannon Demonstration
Weekends at noon: How were soldiers prepared to defend the Golden Gate during the Gold Rush? Test your hand at becoming a certified cannoneer at Fort Point National Historic Site. Details
