The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 20, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Saturday, May 6, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special 60-minute program at Chickamauga Battlefield delving into two of the battle’s commanders and one of the war’s most prominent families. Visitors will meet at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center, then caravan to the site of Jay’s Mill, where they will participate in a program detailing the McCook family and the events that Col. Daniel McCook undertook on the first day’s fighting.

How some consider the Manning family the first family of football, the McCook’;s, of Chickamauga fame, obtaining the highest rank in the family, that of major general. The family’s contributions during the war led to the Republic’s restoration and the nation becoming whole once again.

Please remember to dress appropriately for weather conditions and to bring a bottle of water. Folding chairs are also welcome.
