Cat Island Bear Activity Closure

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 7, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Bayfield, WI - A temporary closure is in place for Cat Island for day-use and overnight use due to bear activity. This includes campsite 1 and the Cat Island camping zone. The closure is in effect beginning 4:00 pm on July 7, 2017.

One resident bear is frequenting the area and has exhibited behavior that indicates it is not afraid of humans. The help of visitors is needed to make sure that no food is left unattended and any bear activity is reported immediately to Park Headquarters at 715-779-3398, ext. 1315.

The closure will be re-evaluated at least weekly. As soon as it appears the bear will stay away from visitor use areas, the island will be reopened.
