Richmond’s Rebellious Past

RICHMOND, Va.-As millions of annual visitors and locals can attest, it’s no secret that Richmond’s long, colorful history is an intrinsic part of its appeal. On Saturday, Aug. 26, Richmond National Battlefield Park invites the public to join Rangers Bert Dunkerly and Mike Gorman for two free bus tours that explore the city’s rich past. Titled “Richmond in Rebellion" and “Richmond in Reconstruction," each three-hour tour will take visitors through Richmond’s tumultuous history, highlighting sites associated with significant events from the 1600s to the 1960s, including the 1775 Second Convention to elect delegates to the Continental Congress, the 1863 Bread Riot, and the 1960 sit-in at Thalhimer’s. Tours will be offered at 9 am and again at 1 pm, so participants have the option of taking one tour or both.

This is the second year that Richmond’s national parks have offered a bus tour in conjunction with the anniversary of the National Park Service, which was established on Aug. 25, 1916. “Richmond’s history is our nation’s history, and we are excited and honored to celebrate the 101st birthday of the National Park Service with the community," said David Ruth, Superintendent of Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site.

Space for this program is limited, and participants must RSVP. To reserve a seat, please contact Bert Dunkerly at (804) 226-5028 or via email at Bert_Dunkerly@nps.gov.
