Statement from Manhattan Project NHP on the Resumption of Visitor Services Following End of Government Shutdown

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 23, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Following the enactment of the continuing resolution, staff at Manhattan Project National Historical Park have resumed regular operations.

We appreciate the support of our local partners who stepped up to offer support and continue to serve our visitors over the last few days and we would like to thank the following partners:

1. Hanford, WA: park visitor center, operated through a DOE contract.

2. Los Alamos, NM: Bradbury Science Museum operated through a DOE contract, and Los Alamos History Museum, operated by the Los Alamos Historical Society.

3. Oak Ridge, TN: American Museum of Science and Energy operated through a DOE contract, and the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge, operated by a non-profit organization.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park employees are happy to be back at work, serving the American people and welcoming visitors to their national parks.

Formally established in November 2015 via a Memorandum of Agreement between the Department of Energy and the National Park Service to preserve portions of three World War II sites where the United States developed the first atomic weapons, the park marks the history of the people, science, events, and controversy associated with the creation of the atomic bomb in the top-secret effort known as the Manhattan Project. Under the agreement, the NPS and DOE jointly manage and administer the park.
