Haleakalā National Park Recruiting For Volunteers

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 30, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Haleakalā National Park is recruiting local residents for visitor center volunteers and Kia`i ala Hele (Trail Guardians) volunteers to educate visitors about the unique natural and cultural resources of Haleakalā. Families are particularly encouraged to apply. The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 16, 2018.

Visitor center volunteers commit to volunteering 6 hours per week for 6 months. They provide information about park resources in the two visitor centers located in the Summit District. They may also assist, as needed, on guided walks or talks. 2018 is the second year of this program.

Kia`i ala Hele volunteers commit to volunteering 6 hours per month for 6 months. They will provide general and safety information to hikers and backpackers on popular park trails in the Summit and Kīpahulu District. This program is in its fourth year.

Volunteers will receive a Hawai’i Tri-Park Pass after 12 volunteer hours (excluding training). This pass is valid for one year and covers admission to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Site, and Haleakalā National Park. After volunteering for 250 hours, volunteers receive a nationwide volunteer annual pass, good for all national parks in the U.S.A.

Three required training sessions will be offered: Tuesday, Feb. 20, 5pm-8pm, Pukalani Community Center; Wednesday, Feb. 21, 5pm-8pm, Pukalani Community Center; and Saturday, Feb. 24, 8am-5pm, at park headquarters. Trainings will cover natural and cultural resources, education, safety, and radio protocols. Volunteers must attend all sessions.

An additional training on CPR/First Aid will be scheduled in March or volunteers can provide proof of current certifications.
