Battlefield Book Club 2018

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Feb. 5, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

2018 marks the 150th commemorative year of the Battle of the Washita. Readers are invited to join us in learning about the many stories of the American Indian Wars from the changes made in the landscape and cultures after Columbus landed, to the individual stories of people living in a forever altered world. Pick your books up at the library one month before each discussion, read along, and join us for the Battlefield Book Clubs occurring at both the Minnie R. Slief Library in Cheyenne, and the Carnegie Library in Elk City during the sesquicentennial year of the Washita.

The first of four books is Mochi’s War by Chris Enss. Mochi is a 24-year-old woman, and after surviving the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864, becomes a warrior of the Cheyenne Nation. She fights and battles on, not because she wants to, but because survival demands she does. March is Women’s History Month and what better way to honor the women of the past, then to make sure their trials and accomplishments are remembered and talked about long into the future. Pick- up a copy of Mochi’s War at one of the libraries and join us.
