The National Park Service is inviting public comment on initial ideas developed as part of a planning effort for the Mt. Wanda Unit of John Muir National Historic Site. Mt. Wanda is a 330-acre part of the historic Martinez ranch where John Muir lived. At Mt. Wanda, visitors can walk in John Muir’s footsteps as they explore, research, and appreciate the wildness of this inspirational landscape. The plan for Mt. Wanda will identify new visitor opportunities and functions, facility needs and resource management strategies, while improving the connectivity of Mt. Wanda to other areas of the park and the broader community.
“The Mount Wanda portion of the Historic Site provides an opportunity to experience some of the wildness that Muir reveled in as he conceived ideas for his many writings, and spent time with his family" said Sue Fritzke, Acting Superintendent.
The public can provide valuable insight, perspective, and ideas at this early stage of the planning process. Comments will be accepted from April 21st through June 15, 2018, at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/JOMU_MtWanda, at one of the public meetings listed below, or by mailing or hand delivering comments to:

During this comment period the Park Service will host two public events/meetings. At these events, the NPS will explain the planning process, share preliminary options, answer your questions, and gather your ideas for Mt. Wanda.

To attend the public meeting at Strentzel Creek, please RSVP to Jim MacDonald at John Muir National Historic Site (925-228-8860 x6431). If needed, you may also request an off-road wheelchair at this number. The site is largely undeveloped with gravel roads and no paved pathways.
The park will provide further public comment opportunities when the formal environmental review process for the plan commences in 2019.
