Fatality in Kīpahulu District

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 7, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

In the late afternoon of Saturday, May 5, 2018, a 34-year old male visitor from Indiana was killed by falling rocks in an off-trail section of the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park. He was with 3 other visitors in a Pīpīwai Stream Tributary, about a 15-minute off-trail hike from Waimoku Falls. The deceased’s companions attempted CPR and called 911. Haleakalā National Park rangers and Maui Fire Department responded but the victim died at the scene. The victim’s body was recovered Sunday morning by Maui Fire Department and Haleakalā National Park rangers.
