“Above and Beyond the Call of Duty:” Medal of Honor Recipients in the Battle of Chickamauga

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 9, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Sunday, May 27, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special 90-minute car caravan tour focusing on Medal of Honor recipients at Chickamauga. This program begins at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center.

The Medal of Honor is still considered to be one of the most prestigious honors received while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The Medal was born during the Civil War and was ultimately awarded over 1,500 times for acts during that conflict, almost half of all Medals ever awarded. Nine men who fought along the banks of Chickamauga Creek in September 1863 received the honor, but what did each of them do that was considered “above the call of duty?" This tour will profile some of these men and answer that question. It will also explore the service of other individuals whose actions were just as worthy, yet they did not receive the honor.
