Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Saturday July 28, and on Sunday, July 29, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a special youth-focused living history encampment at Point Park on Lookout Mountain. Living historians with the Western Federal Infantry will provide young people opportunities to “enlist" and interact at stations on infantry and artillery drill, the daily lives of soldiers, and to learn about the challenges and experiences of southern Unionists in Chattanooga. On Saturday, interactive stations will be ongoing from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday, from 10 am to 3 pm. Each day there will be infantry firing demonstrations at 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. Admission to Point Park is $7 per adult, ages 16 and over. Ages 15 and under are free.
In the summer of 1864, the Union Army set up recruiting stations in the Chattanooga area to enlist both loyal white residents and African Americans. Many area residents answered the call and enlisted in units being organized in the city, like the 6th Tennessee Mounted Infantry or the 44th United States Colored Troops. The park hopes you will come and learn about army life in Chattanooga during the summer of 1864.
