SAVANNAH - In honor of National Lighthouse Day, Fort Pulaski National Monument will host a special ranger-guided hike on our Lighthouse Overlook Trail. This 1.7 mile out-and-back guided hike will begin Tuesday, August 7th, at 9:30 am and take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. The lighthouse trail winds along the east side of the island and is appropriate for visitors of all ages.
During the hike visitors will experience the wonder of Cockspur Island’s flora and fauna as a park ranger explains the importance of the salt marsh and the diversity of the creatures that inhabit it. The trail ends with the closest land view of the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. Built in 1856 to mark the South Channel of the Savannah River, the lighthouse has endured crashing waves, powerful hurricanes, and even survived the 1862 Union bombardment of Fort Pulaski. This hike will be a great opportunity for photography and learning more about the cultural and natural environments of Fort Pulaski National Monument.
Visitors are asked to meet at the Visitor Center by 9:15 am. Due to the narrowness of the trail, the hike will be limited to 30 people. Spots will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is a good chance the trail will be muddy and buggy, so bring bug spray and wear appropriate clothes and shoes!
