Cars and Trucks on Display
Homestead National Monument of America
On Sunday of Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the shade of the Education Center at Homestead National Monument of America. Car enthusiasts can enjoy cars from the 1900’s through the 1980s; original/restored and modified cars and pickups will be on display. You are invited to come and view these vehicles, and if you have one you would like to show off, bring it along! Registration is FREE! You be the judge! There will be people’s choice awards by the decade. Also, join Southeast Community College professor Preston Shires at the Homestead Education Center at 1 p.m. for his program “Prelude to the Homestead Act."
Inside the Homestead Education Center during the car show will be displays of collectible items such as quilts, baskets, and more! In fact, you can also expect to find a few of the classic cars inside!
“One of the many effects of the Homestead Act of 1862 was that it hastened industrial advancements and quickened innovation in machinery, including the development of all kinds of motor vehicles which Homesteaders depended on. Linking the automotive era and the homestead era through this car show is a fun way to illustrate that effect," said Superintendent Mark Engler.
At 1 p.m. historian Preston Shires will give his presentation “Prelude to the Homestead Act" at the Education Center. Dr. Shires holds a PhD in History from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is an Instructor of History at Southeast Community College, Lincoln. Preston is also an author of academic works and of novels in historical fiction. His latest book, Life in a Casket, features Brownville, Nebraska, in 1857. Preston's family moved into Nebraska in 1856, and he is the recipient of the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award.
Visit Homestead National Monument of America during the Labor Day Weekend and enjoy the National Homesteading Museum, the Farm Implements Exhibit, the historic Palmer-Epard Cabin, the 1872 one room school house (Freeman School), and over 3 miles of hiking trails across the oldest restored tallgrass prairie on the National Park Service.
