13th Annual Quilt Display Over Labor Day Weekend

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 23, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Strong City, Kansas - Come see the 13th annual quilt display at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve over the Labor Day Weekend, featuring beautiful red and white quilts on display in the historic limestone barn. If you have a red and white quilt you would like to display, call the preserve at 620-273-8494 (hit 0). Quilts are needed by August 29th and can be dropped off at the preserve between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. It’s not too late to participate.

Red and white quilts were fashionable from 1880 - 1930. The two contrasting colors have been a combination that quilt makers and needlework fans have gravitated to for generations. Red is a bold color symbolizing victory, strength, and passion, while the color white is a symbol of innocence and used in the Western world for wedding and Christening gowns. The combination of the two colors create a vivid starkness of beauty that speaks to both men and women.

The quilts will be on display in the historic limestone barn from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Feel free to vote for your favorite quilt. On Monday, September 3rd at 1 p.m., the winner will be announced. Quilting demonstrations will be available on Saturday and visitors will have the opportunity to learn from National Park Service rangers and local experts about the origins of quilting, traditional designs, and modern techniques. Quilting bees were a way for women of the community to come together to complete a task, but also to catch up on the latest news.

On Saturday a live music concert will be played among the beautiful quilts from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the historic 1882 limestone barn. Come experience the acoustical sounds of voices and musical instruments among the beauty of the quilts.
