Ramah, NM - The National Park Service invites everyone to join the rangers at El Morro National Monument for a day of fun, education, and camels. The U. S. Camel Corps Commemoration will take place on Saturday September 15. El Morro National Monument is located 45 miles southwest from Grants, NM off of Highway 53. The monument will be open at 9:00 a.m. and activities will run until 5:00 p.m. Programs and presentations about camels will be offered throughout the day including living history presentations by camel expert Doug Baum and educational programs by park rangers. You will also have the special experience of seeing camels up close and personal.

Several years before the Civil War, a most unique United States military expedition passed by the towering cliff face of El Morro. The U.S. Camel Corps traveled through this area as part of an experimental trip from Texas to California in 1857, leaving their unique mark in place and time. Some members of the expedition even inscribed their names on El Morro. Mounted and packed to the fullest, U.S. Army camelsproved their potential for western travel. Come out and discover the importance of camels in American History through educational programs and have a firsthand encounter with camels.
