St. Augustine, FL - On Saturday October 6, 2018, Florida Living History, Inc. (FLH), in partnership with the National Park Service’s Castillo de San Marcos National Monument will commemorate the founding of the Castillo de San Marcos. Join us for a 4:00 p.m. re-enactment of the 1672 “ground-breaking" ceremony featuring General Don Manuel de Cendoya, royal Governor and Captain-General of Florida, and the royal officials of the presidio of San Agustín. This FREE event will take place just outside the Castillo’s main entrance.

Throughout the day, in conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month, volunteers from FLH and the Castillo de San Marcos will commemorate this important date in American history - 346 years later - with living history activities and displays, including cannon firing demonstrations. Normal entrance fees apply for activities within the Castillo.

Built by the Spanish in St. Augustine to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States and interprets more than 450 years of cultural intersections.
