BARK Ranger Program Launch

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 11, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Vicksburg, MS: On October 20th, 2018 Vicksburg National Military Park will launch a new BARK Ranger program for visitors and their pet dogs. This program is designed to encourage active and responsible use of the park by visitors and their dogs.

“This is an exciting development for Vicksburg National Military Park," said Chief of Interpretation Scott Babinowich. “Many dog owners already use the park for active recreation, and we hope to encourage more of the local community to explore the military park with their dogs in a responsible way and learn more about this amazing resource in our backyard."

Programs are free and will take place at the Visitor Center at 9am and 2pm on October 20th, but normal entrance fees apply. The program will be begin with a short ranger talk about animals in the Civil War, and be followed by an easy 2.75 mile walk with your dog through the park. Upon returning to the Visitor Center, dogs will be sworn in as the first official BARK Rangers at Vicksburg National Military Park and be given a memento to mark their accomplishment.

Much like the existing Junior Ranger Program, special BARK Ranger program will be offered throughout the year, and dogs can become BARK Rangers at any time. Interested visitors should stop by the visitor center to pick up more information.

Dogs must remain on leashes of 6ft or less at all times, and it is always important to maintain control of your dog and clean up after your pets. Find out more information about the BARK Ranger program at: http://go.nps.gov/VicksburgDogs
