Winter Operations 2018-2019

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 20, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Winter operations at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument begins Nov. 1, 2018 and ends on Feb. 28, 2019. The Thomas Condon Paleontology Visitor Center, in the Sheep Rock Unit, will be open 10 am - 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. The visitor center will be closed on Sundays and Mondays as well as all federal holidays.

Beginning March 1, 2019, the visitor center will be open daily, 10 am - 5 pm.

“Being closed Sundays and Mondays, I am hopeful that this reorganization of resources will allow the staff to reach out to more schools and more school kids," says Superintendent Patrick Gamman.

All outdoor recreation opportunities in the park will remain open from sunrise to sunset, including all overlooks and hiking trails at the park’s three units: Sheep Rock, Painted Hills, and Clarno.
