The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Nov. 16, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

On Friday, Nov. 16, Bay Area air quality is at “very unhealthy levels." Out of concern for the safety of park and partner employees, and visitors, Golden Gate National Recreation Area (including Fort Point National Historic Site and Muir Woods National Monument) and its partners are suspending visitor operations.

The following visitor facilities will be closed today:

Presidio Visitor Center, Crissy Field Warming Hut, Alcatraz Island services, Fort Point National Historic Site, Muir Woods National Monument Visitor Center and concessions, Marin Headlands Visitor Center, Lands End Lookout, and Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center. No access will be available to Alcatraz Island.

Volunteer programs, outdoor walks, and education programs are also suspended. All emergency services and emergency facility operations will continue to be available. Park management will reevaluate park operations as conditions change.
