Holiday Weekend Advisory: Plan Ahead to Visit Muir Woods National Monument, Alcatraz Island, Marin Headlands, and Coastal Areas

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Dec. 28, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Muir Woods National Monument and Alcatraz Island will remain open to visitors this holiday weekend. Due entirely to funding by concession operators (Alcatraz Cruises, Ace Parking, which operates the Muir Woods parking reservation system GoMuirWoods.com, and the Muir Woods Trading Company), National Park Service (NPS) staff are on site to coordinate the safety of park visitors at these areas. Muir Woods National Monument and Alcatraz Island operations will remain open through agreement with the NPS until January 6.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to plan ahead, allow for delays and closures, and consider choosing another location in local communities for holiday outings during this busy time. Due to the government shutdown, park websites may not reflect current conditions and access to park sites may change without notice. Visitors should expect significant traffic delays in the Marin Headlands and throughout the parks. Due to limitations of the government shutdown, visitors are asked to "Pack it In and Pack it Out." Trash and bathroom services will be unavailable or closed entirely to comply with government shutdown requirements.
