Volunteers Needed for Cemetery Cleanup Feb 9th

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 30, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Vicksburg, MS: Vicksburg National Military Park is looking for volunteers to help remove downed limbs and trees from the National Cemetery. The workday will begin at 8:30am at the USS Cairo parking lot.

Volunteers are needed to help move tree limbs and cut tree-rounds to the cemetery road and loaded into dump trucks. All protective equipment will be provided, but volunteers need to bring sturdy shoes, long pants, and dress for the weather.

During a severe storm on December 27th, over 30 large trees were damaged. Park maintenance crews are working diligently to clear the damage, but volunteer support will help to reopen the cemetery even sooner.

“We are hoping for a large turnout," said Superintendent Bill Justice. “This is a great opportunity for members of our community to lend a helping hand by restoring the National Cemetery and honoring the sacrifice of the over 18,000 service members interred here."

Individuals and groups are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Volunteer Coordinator Rose Rains at (601)630-6021 or Danielle_rains@partner.nps.gov.
