National Park Service Receives Grant to Provide Outdoor Experiences

Brecksville, Ohio - Through a $10,000 grant from Eastern National Parks and Monument Association, youth and families from Cleveland and Akron experienced a trip to Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP). The park worked in cooperation with Akron Recreation Bureau, Cleveland Community Centers and ICARE mentoring.

The grant from Eastern National Parks and Monument Association provided the transportation for over 1,000 of the youth attending this summers’ Get Up, Get Out and Go! program.

CVNP's youth in Cleveland and Akron to recreational activities in underserved. A free train ride was sponsored by Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Throughout the summer, youth hiked the Ledges Trail, explored the Beaver Marsh, biked on the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, fished in Kendall Lake, and enjoyed wide open spaces.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude…. The families absolutely loved their days in the park and learning all the fun information from the rangers. We really loved the hike and all the fun things we saw and did!", said Rachel Cuyahoga, Project Rise Special Programs Coordinator.

Project Rise is a federally funded program and a collaborative effort by Akron Public Schools, local shelters, and the community to provide supplemental educational services to children and youth who are experiencing homelessness.
