Vicksburg National Cemetery Reopens

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on March 25, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Vicksburg, MS: Vicksburg National Cemetery has reopened to all public use. The National Cemetery has been closed since a severe storm on Dec. 27, 2018 damaged over 35 large-growth trees.

“Our maintenance crews have spent every available minute in the national cemetery cleaning up debris," said Superintendent Bill Justice. “The damage was so immense that we called upon the community to help. Over the last few months, over 1000 volunteer hours have been graciously donated by community members, groups, and AmeriCorps volunteers to help with the cleanup efforts. It is because of their hard work that we are finally able to reopen the cemetery."

Over 50 dump truck loads worth of downed limbs were removed from the cemetery over the last 3 months.

Vicksburg National Cemetery, located within Vicksburg National Military Park, is accessible from the Park Tour Road from 8am-5pm daily.
