New construction on Wise Road in Northwest DC

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 18, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON - The National Park Service is nearing the end of the road- road construction in Rock Creek Park that is. Beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, Wise Road NW between Oregon Avenue NW and Beach Drive NW will close to drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists until fall. The closure is to allow construction on Beach Drive and to completely resurface Wise Road.

“We’re approaching the final stages of construction on Beach Drive. Visitors will soon have smooth rides throughout Rock Creek Park," Superintendent Julia Washburn said. “Working on Wise Road is one of the last steps to complete the full reconstruction of Beach Drive and the roads that connect to it in Rock Creek Park."

Just like work on the rest of Beach Drive, this means Wise Road will be closed to drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. It is important that visitors not enter these closed areas. People who violate the closure slow construction and are subject to citation.

The three-year construction project remains on schedule to end by fall 2019. Stay up to date by visiting go.nps.gov/beachdrive and signing up for Nixle alerts by texting BEACHDRIVE to 888777.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed Beach Drive in 1897 to improve access to America's first urban national park. Today, drivers take more than 12 million trips through Rock Creek Park every year and more than 40,000 people recreate there every weekend.
