The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 11, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

RICHMOND, Va.- Over the weekend of May 18-19 the public is invited to Drewry’s Bluff, site of the Union Navy’s only attempt to capture Richmond by water, to learn about the area’s Civil War naval history. This is an unprecedented opportunity to learn about lesser known aspects of the war, such as the significance of the Confederate Naval Academy and Marine Camp of Instruction. The event runs 10-5 Saturday and 10-4 Sunday and is free of charge.

Ever wondered what life was like in a Civil War fort? Reenactors will be camped at Drewry’s Bluff with displays of historic weapons, equipment, and tools used by sailors and marines. Visitors can observe artillery drills, take guided tours of the site, and explore living history camps.

Guided tours will highlight the naval battle that tested Richmond’s defenses on May 15, 1862. Additionally, in honor of Kids to Parks Day on May 18, children can fill out a special Junior Ranger booklet and earn a free patch!
