The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is unveiling its new ranger programming this month and it is a great mix of western history, as well as local nature and science.
On June 21, at 7 pm in the Lovell Visitor Center, Ranger Todd Johnson will be presenting his program, “John Wesley Powell and the Importance of Water in the West." This year marks the 150th anniversary of Powell’s expedition down the Colorado River but many people aren’t aware of his significant work on water conservation in the West during the latter part of the 19th century
“His views about the importance of water in the west, largely ignored in his time, have become prophetic and have once again come to the forefront of the regional conversation about economic development and climate issues," said Johnson.
On June 28, at 7 pm in the Horseshoe Bend Amphitheater Ranger, Jen Prentiss will present an interactive game of “Guess Who", a program focused on local animals found in the canyon. Ranger Prentiss will share unique stories about the ecosystem and have pelts and skulls on hand for the audience to examine.
“The wildlife is such an important part of the Bighorn Canyon experience and I’m looking forward to helping people gain a better understanding of this unparalleled resource," said Prentiss.
