SCRANTON, Pa. - Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) is pleased to host a special temporary exhibition by noted railroad and commercial photographer, Dan Troy. Titled, “Transcontinental Railroad Photography," the exhibition highlights modern railroading through the west-central United States, which was first conquered with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. The exhibition of approximately two dozen photographs will be available for public viewing from July 1 to Dec. 1, 2019.
The challenges first faced by workers who slowly chiseled their way through the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains during and after the American Civil War to complete the first transcontinental railroad can yet be imagined through Dan Troy’s artistic placement of trains in the ever rugged western United States. While his lens captures powerful locomotives pulling freight trains more than a mile in length that are beyond the ken of mid-nineteenth century railroaders, these modern titans of commerce remain overwhelmed by the stark, yet picturesque, western landscape.
Dan Troy has been photographing railroads for more than thirty years, his interest in trains being tied to growing up in a town rich in railroading heritage and a family imbedded in the American railroading culture. As noted on his website, Dan’s “elegant pairing of the majesty of Nature and the drama of railroading has earned him an international reputation." The exhibition is available for viewing during regular operating hours.
Located in downtown Scranton, Pa., Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then follow the brown and white signs to the park entrance at Lackawanna Avenue and Cliff Street (GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67 or use 350 Cliff Street, Scranton).
