West Glacier, MT - Glacier National Park’s July Artist-in-Residence, Chad Farnes, brings his tape-art ingenuity and vision to the park this month.
Farnes, who is working in the park until Aug. 2, uses the unique medium of tape - including duct tape, washi tape, and painter’s tape - to create photo-realistic images. His mosaic-like art emphasizes the overall impact achieved through a collection of small pieces.
While in Glacier, Farnes plans to recreate images of the park using only tape. He also will aid visitors in creating their own tape-art masterpieces through a “tape-by-numbers" system. The goal is for visitors to evaluate the importance of individual actions when creating a sustainable environment.

Farnes will lead a tape-art workshop for visitors in the Waterton portion of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Please join us at this international event in celebration of the cooperation between Canada and the US. Ages 10+ are welcome to participate in the hands-on portion of the workshop.
Farnes, who grew up in California and now lives in Utah, started creating tape art in college when he decorated his dorm room with murals in blue painter’s tape. Farnes has created a number of works honoring national parks, including 59 pieces he exhibited in a show called Tape·ography at the Finch Gallery in Salt Lake City. He has shown his art in other locations around the country, including the Utah County Art Gallery and in Brooklyn, New York, at the Crest Hardware Art Show.
Farnes is the park’s second 2019 Artist-in-Residence, following last month’s visit by Amory Abbott. The park’s final Artist-in-Residence this year will be Nic Fischer, a painter who combines field studies with satellite imagery to illustrate backcountry exploration in expansive landscapes. Fischer will work in the park August 26 to September 20. More details are coming soon.
The Artist-in-Residence program offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. Each artist also engages the public through outreach programs. Digital images of selected work produced as a part of the residency may be used in park publications, websites and presentations for education and outreach.
