Healthy Parks Healthy People August Events

Appomattox, VA - Appomattox Court House National Historical Park announces three trail walks in July as part of the Healthy Parks Healthy People partnership. On Saturday, August 3rd the park will host a history walk beginning at the North Carolina Monument pull-off. Bring your dog for a walk on the trail at the Lee’s Headquarters pull-off on Saturday, August 10th. Join a local doctor for a Walk with a Doc Program on Saturday, August 17th. Trail walks are part of the Healthy Parks Healthy People partnership between Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and the Virginia State Parks Central Region.

History Walk: On Saturday, August 3rd at 10:00 a.m., join a park ranger for guided walk beginning at the North Carolina Monument pull-off. The 1.5 - 2 mile walk will cross ground important to the last battle and the events that led to the surrender meeting on April 9, 1865. Enjoy a walk with a ranger to get a daily dose of history and exercise. Dress accordingly for an outdoor walk, and wear comfortable shoes.

Dog Walk: Bring your dog (or pick up a canine friend at the local Appomattox shelter) for a casual walk along one of the park trails on Saturday, August 10th at 10:00 a.m. beginning at the Lee’s Headquarters pull-off. Enjoy a light walk with other dog owners and your favorite canine companion along the 2 mile Tobacco Prizery Nature Trail. Please wear appropriate shoes for walking in the woods. All dogs must be kept on a leash.

Walk with a DOC: Join Dr. Teodora Brose of CVFP - Appomattox Family who leads a monthly Walk with a DOC program on park trails. With an aim to make hope and health accessible to all, this doctor led walking group is a safe, fun, and FREE place to get some steps, learn about health, and meet new friends. This month’s walk along the Grant’s Approach Trail will be held on Saturday, August 17th from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Please meet the group in the main visitor parking lot to begin the hike. GPS users should use 111 National Park Drive, Appomattox, VA. Please wear appropriate shoes for walking.

The Healthy Parks Healthy People partnership is composed of seven area parks including Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, Bear Creek Lake State Park, High Bridge Trail State Park, Holliday Lake State Park, James River State Park, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, and Twin Lakes State Park. Our mission is to showcase healthy recreational opportunities on public lands and encourage stewardship of these special places.
