Appomattox, VA- Join the staff of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park for a day of service on National Public Lands Day, Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019. For this year’s project, volunteers will plant pollinator plots to create pollinator habitat within the park from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers will use hand tools to turn over soil in specified patches, seed with a native wildflower mix, and then cover with straw.
The park will have up to 30 patches marked out just west of the historic village. Please park at the Confederate Cemetery. The park will provide water and all the necessary tools. The project provides an excellent opportunity to bring Civil War, National Park, and nature enthusiasts together in an effort to keep the park looking great for current and future generations.
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands, with more than 175,000 volunteers and park partners participating in projects at more than 2,100 public land sites in all 50 states. National Public Lands Day keeps the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the “tree army" created in 1933 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to preserve and protect America’s natural heritage.
