COPPER CENTER, AK - On Feb. 18, 2020 the National Park Service (NPS) awarded a construction contract to complete Phase III of the Upper Mill Building Structural Repairs. The successful contractor is Alaska Aggregate Products LLC. of Palmer, Alaska.
This project consists of stabilizing the upper levels of the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark (NHL) Concentration Mill Building in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The work will include selective replacement of deteriorated heavy timber wood columns, beams, floor and roof structures, installation of horizontal siding, and the partial demolition and reconstruction of the high-grade ore chute.
Due to the extent of the stabilization work the NPS anticipates the closure of the building to the public during the project. However, other historic buildings in the NHL will be open and historical tours of the mill town with the park’s concessioner, St. Elias Alpine Guides (SEAG), will continue to be offered.
The NPS anticipates the project will be accomplished over two construction seasons, May through September 2020 and May through September 2021. This project is scheduled to be completed in October 2021.
