The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 2, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

Fort Monroe, Va. - Fort Monroe National Monument, in consultation with the Fort Monroe Authority, City of Hampton, and Virginia Health Department, is announcing additional modifications to operations to support federal, state, and local efforts to slow the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

As of April 1, 2020, Fort Monroe National Monument will offer limited services other than resource protection and the following services, operations, and access will be limited or suspended in order to be consistent with the Commonwealth of Virginia and City of Hampton orders:

* All public programming is suspended

* Vehicular access to Fenwick Road north of De Russy Field (baseball) is prohibited

* Bicycles and pedestrians are allowed to access Fenwick Road north of De Russy Field (baseball)

* Beach access is limited to walking and exercise use only within CDC and VA Department of Health recommendations.

* These suspensions and closures will remain in effect until such time as determined to be prudent to reopen, considering community, Commonwealth, and CDC guidelines for social distancing and public gatherings.

The remaining grounds at Fort Monroe National Monument will remain open and proper social distancing and health standards need to continue to be followed. The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners at Fort Monroe National Monument is our number one priority. The National Park Service (NPS) is working service wide with federal, state, and local authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic. We will notify the public when we resume full operations and provide updates here and social media channels.

The NPS encourages people to adhere to Executive Order 55 from the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia to remain at home as much as possible. For those who choose to visit Fort Monroe National Monument during this pandemic, please adhere to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local public health authorities to protect visitors and employees. As services are limited, the NPS urges visitors to continue to practice Leave No Trace principles, including pack-in and pack-out, to keep outdoor spaces safe and healthy.

More than 20,000 National Park Service employees care for America’s 419 national parks and work with communities across the nation to help preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities. Visit: www.nps.gov to learn more.
