The National Park Service is repaving the entire Clara Barton Parkway

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 14, 2020. It is reproduced in full below.

McLean, Va. - The National Park Service will begin road improvements that include repaving the entire Clara Barton Parkway (Chain Bridge to Macarthur Boulevard at Carderock, Md.) Work will begin on or about July 27 and will be complete around the end of 2020. The project will also improve:

* Ramps

* Parking lots

* Bridge decks

* Road drainage

Drivers should expect non-rush hour lane closures on the Clara Barton Parkway and temporary, multi-day ramp closures. Ramp closures will usually begin on Fridays and last for about two weeks. When individual ramps are closed, signs will indicate detours to other access or exit points along the parkway.

The NPS will continue the regular changes to the traffic pattern between the Glen Echo turnaround and Chain Bridge, Mondays to Fridays. These changes happen:

* Eastbound (to downtown Washington, DC) from 6:15 a.m. to 10 a.m.

* Westbound (to Maryland) from 2:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.

“In addition to repaving the parkway and parking lots, we’re implementing some of the recommendations in our 2019 Glen Echo Park safety assessment," George Washington Memorial Parkway Superintendent, Charles Cuvelier said. “The community, by sharing their ideas for the safety assessment, helped us prioritize projects and improve the recreational driving experience for park visitors."

Some of the improvements the NPS will make in response to comments we received during the Glen Echo Park - Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Assessment include:

* Installing new signs

* Painting brighter/clearer lane lines and striping

* Reconfiguring lanes

* Trimming vegetation close to the road

The NPS will share more information about the work as well as photos at go.nps.gov/CBParkwayRepaving. The NPS is partnering with the Federal Highway Administration to complete this project.
